Ignoring chronic heartburn poses significant risks as untreated GERD can result in serious complications. It’s essential to address this condition quickly to prevent potential health issues. Early intervention can help lower the risks associated with untreated GERD.
What is GERD?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, is a persistent condition in which the regular flow of stomach acid goes back into the esophagus, resulting in irritation and inflammation. It is not a temporary indigestion or heartburn, nor is it the result of diet.
Symptoms of GERD commonly include:
- Heartburn
- Regurgitation
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
It’s important to see a specialist if you are experiencing recurring or chronic symptoms.
The risks of untreated GERD
Failure to address GERD may result in complications including:
- Esophagitis. GERD can damage your esophagus. When stomach acid flows back into your esophagus, it irritates the lining, resulting in difficulty to swallow. This occurrence is known as esophagitis.
- Esophageal ulcers. GERD is the leading cause of ulcers in the esophagus. Esophageal ulcers can make it hard to swallow and cause chest pains and nausea.
- Esophageal stricture. Untreated GERD can cause stomach acid to scar the lining of the esophagus. When scar tissue continues to build up, the esophagus narrows in certain spots, resulting in difficulty eating and drinking.
- Barrett’s esophagus. 1% of those with GERD experience Barrett’s esophagus, which causes precancerous changes in your cells.
- Oral issues. Because GERD causes more acid in your mouth, it can lead to oral problems including tooth decay, loss of enamel, and darkening of your teeth.
- Increased risk of esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer typically only causes symptoms in its later stages. In addition to having GERD, other groups who are at an increased risk include: men, those with frequent alcohol use, persons over the age of 55, tobacco users, or those who have had radiation treatment to the upper abdomen or chest
When to see an ENT specialist for GERD
Don’t ignore chronic heartburn. See an ENT specialist if:
- You experience GERD symptoms several times a week, even if they are mild
- You frequently rely on over-the-counter medications for heartburn or acid reflux
- You are encountering side effects due to the excessive use of these medications
Don’t let the complications of GERD affect your quality of life. Find an ENT specialist near you today.
